In 2020, while being a member of a business coaching program, I decided to create the course I wish I had when I started teaching online in 2004. My passion for helping online faculty create satisfying and enjoyable courses that gave face-to-face courses a “run for their money” fueled my hours of design.
Since I could remember, I have always enjoyed designing learning experiences. Yes, even as a child, I pretended to do so for my students who just happened to be my stuffed animals or any playmate who dared to enter my faux classroom. This course allowed me to take what I had learned through years of practice and offer it to others higher educators who dared to teach online. The interesting thing was that the pandemic had forced EVERYONE to do so which was something I could have never predicted.
The design of this course birthed the F.A.C.E. Method and I am so proud of it! It provides a simplistic way to explain, teach, and train others on the multifarious roles of online faculty. Honestly, I never really thought about “all the things” (as Gen Z says) that we, online faculty have to do until I started taking my instructional design courses for my Ph.D. Well, perhaps, I thought about it, but I never put it on paper. Now, I can no longer say that. I am so excited about this method and look forward to sharing it with thousands upon thousands of online faculty so that I can help make teaching online more fulfilling for them which makes it more satisfying for their students.
Now, I would love to share a testimonial from Dr. Jessye Talley who took the course during the summer of 2021 and implemented some strategies she learned from it in the fall. Dr. Talley, Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial Systems and Engineering at Morgan State University shares how she implemented the F.A.C.E. Method in her three courses during the Fall 2021 semester after taking the self-study course during the summer of 2021. The courses she taught were 1) Probability & Statistics, 2) Discrete Event Simulation, and 3)Engineering Economy. Press play to hear her surprising news that only one student failed out of all three courses which was a first-time occurrence for her. Learn why she values the F.A.C.E. Method course and how it helped her create a more student-centered learning environment. This testimonial continues to make my heart happy. Please watch it and share my joy.
