Tales of an Online Lecturer: Episode 3

When you have taught college students online for almost two decades, you will encounter students with various personalities, obstacles, skillsets, mindsets, and dilemmas. And, you will most definitely come across those who make excuses. An excuse is defined as “a reason or explanation put forward to defend or justify a fault or offense” and sometimes, it seems that there are folks who insist on crafting one at all costs…even when just admitting that they fell short would make things so much easier.

Well, in this episode of Tales of an Online Lecturer, I share an experience I had with a student who made excuses for every. single. thing. It wasn’t long before I realized that she was just struggling with a lack of self-confidence based on negative experiences with school in her past. With a mixture of grace and high expectations, she discovered that she could accomplish that which she thought was insurmountable.

Watch to find out the challenges she faced and how I supported her until the end of the semester garnished what she believed to be a successful outcome. Have you experienced a surge of students with excuses? How do you handle those situations? Feel free to share here or in the comment section of the video on YouTube.
